Stay Productive While Working Remotely

Maintaining Productivity: Working From Home

If you have a job that allows you to work remotely, you understand how easy it can be to fall into a rut. While it’s important to have rituals, it’s also important to shake things up a bit to avoid falling into a hole of unproductivity.

We’ve rounded up a few tips to keep you on track and focused as you work remotely.

1. Feeling isolated

Working from home can be rough, especially if you’re home alone. With no one to talk to or bounce ideas off of, you can get a little stir crazy. Opt for a coffee shop with friends or coworkers who you can talk to throughout the day or coworking space with other people in your field. Having people to talk to and create a “company” culture can help make the work feel less like… well, work.

2. Completing projects

Trick yourself into thinking you’re actually in an office setting by dressing for it. Set a schedule to start your day to; wake up, make coffee, eat breakfast, and then get dressed like you would if you were headed to a job in an office with your coworkers instead of sitting in your home or in a coffee shop by yourself. By dressing the part, you’ll give yourself the motivation to actually do the work.

3. Separating work and home life

It’s already difficult to stop thinking about work when you leave the office at a regular job. If you work from your home, it can be almost impossible. When you look around your kitchen and see a project spread across your table, it can be easy to fall into the trap of sitting down and diving into work even though you’re technically “off-duty”. If you have a dedicated office for working in, great! If not, try to keep your work confined to one area of the house that you don’t have to look at constantly. Keeping your work away from the areas where you relax can prevent you from dipping in more often than you should.

4. Lack of movement

It’s easy to fall into a lazy routine. Wake up, sit down on the couch with your computer, and not get up again until the end of the day? That’s not healthy! Aim to get 10,000 to 15,000 steps each day in order to prevent cardiovascular disease, better your overall being, and promote weight loss. Set a timer to remind yourself to get up and get active, even if it’s just into the kitchen and back.

5. Block out noise

If you work in a noisy environment, it can be difficult to block out the chatter and commotion going on around you as you work. Make sure you have quality headphones with you to pop on anytime you feel like your attention is shifting to the noise around you rather than on the work at hand. Listening to white noise can help keep you focused!
