Office Decor: How to Foster Productivity without Stifling Creativity

December 22, 2016

When it comes to office decor, it can be hard to keep your employees focused while simultaneously fostering creativity. Many difficult questions arise when it comes to selecting an office setup and decor. Should it be open concept? Should the walls be brightly colored or neutral? All of the decisions you make combine to set the tone for how productive and creative your employees will be, and that’s a lot of pressure! Take a look at these tips for fostering productivity without eliminating the space for creativity to bloom.

Natural Lighting

Big windows allow for natural light to flow freely into the office and keep it bright and lively. Unlike harsh fluorescent lights, natural light is comforting, warm, and creates a great work space for both productivity and creativity! As an added bonus, big windows open up the room and make it feel less crowded, while also giving you a great view of your city or town. Overall, big windows are a game changer. If your office space is limited on natural light and big windows, make sure to optimize the ones you do have by arranging desk areas near as much natural light as possible.

Break Rooms – Helping Creativity and Productivity

Forget about the traditional break rooms with a coffee pot, microwave, and not much else. Your break rooms should be full of bright colors, a dream board, coloring utensils, extremely comfortable seating (such as bean bag chairs), and anything else that will help your team get their creative juices flowing. Also, don’t be afraid to let these rooms be cluttered. Even companies that aren’t creative in nature can benefit from some creative thinking. These rooms should be open for conversations and you should encourage your employees to use them often.

Not only will this environment help with creativity, but it will also help with productivity. First, employees are more productive when they have break rooms. In addition, providing employees a place to go when they need space to talk and be collaborative will allow the other office areas to remain quiet and less distracting for those who need their full concentration.

Even though office decor and setup can make or break an environment, there is no reason to fret. By making the most of natural lighting and designated creative spaces, your office will be able to be productive and creative.
