Achieving Inbox Zero

July 12, 2016

Turning a tedious office task into an email marketing strategy

Everyone dreams of it, but it always seems to be so far out of reach. Of course this is in reference to the epitome of workplace bliss: achieving inbox zero.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this terminology, inbox zero is when your email inbox is completely cleared and all of your past emails are sorted into folders. Being organized helps combat stress and makes you a more efficient worker, but did you know that cleaning out your inbox can actually help you come up with a solid email marketing strategy? Take a look at how you can achieve inbox zero and in turn come up with an email marketing strategy for your company.

Reading & Deleting

There’s a reason achieving zero inbox is so satisfying. Having an inbox full of 100 unread emails can be stressful and overwhelming. It’s easier to just ignore it and hope that there wasn’t anything important hiding in there. However, it’s time to face your fears and get down to it. Read all of your emails and delete the ones that are obsolete.

Sorting

Once you have read all of your messages and deleted the junk mail, it’s time to sort your past emails that you may need to reference at a later date. Some offices prefer that their employees don’t delete any emails at all. This is where sorting comes into play. Make different folders based on clients or topics. Then sort all of the emails into the folders. It’s a simple process, but very tedious. However, you will be rewarded in the end!

Reaching the Elusive Inbox Zero

You did it! Your inbox has absolutely no new messages, and all of your past emails have been sorted into folders. You are in organizational email heaven. Sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor. However, you didn’t go through all of that tedious sorting and reading just to have a clean inbox.

Now that you’ve cleaned out your email, you are in the right mindset to create an email marketing campaign. That’s right, all of that reading and sorting was actually a form of primary research. As you were going through all of your unread emails, what type of promotional subject line caught your attention? What content made you want to stay and keep reading? On the other hand, what emails were you automatically able to discard without much investigation? All of these questions can help you determine what works and what doesn’t when it comes to email marketing campaigns. Since email marketing campaigns can be an invaluable tool for any marketing effort, the insights you gain from this experience can make the difference.
