How to “Holiday” While Staying Connected

March 4, 2016

Sometimes being totally unconnected just isn’t an option when you’re on holiday. Business owner or not, if you fall into this category, we’re here to let you know it's okay. We’re also here to let you know it is possible to “holiday” and stay connected in a way that doesn’t take over your vacation.

If you find yourself struggling between holiday and work or the overwhelming aftermath of a holiday without connectivity, here are a few tips that will allow you to manage and enjoy both:

1. Choose one device.

Don’t bring a million gadgets to stay connected. Not only will bringing multiple devices pack the pounds in your suitcase, it will give you more temptation to be overly concerned about work. We recommend bringing your smart phone and leaving the laptop behind. A smart phone will allow you just enough freedom to stay up-to-date with emails while deterring you from digging into more involved work since you won’t have a proper keyboard.

2. Set automatic out of office messages.

Make sure people who are trying to connect with you via email receive an automated reply stating you’re out of the office, when you plan on returning, and an alternative point of contact. Don’t forget to change your voicemail to say a similar message. Notification is the best policy here. Most individuals will understand and respect you are on holiday and will respond at a later date than usual.

3. Work when it’s not taking away from special moments.

Setting work boundaries while on holiday is essential. A good rule of thumb is to turn off the devices during the day when most of the fun-filled activities are taking place. Check and respond to emails and messages each morning or evening and then don’t think twice about it the rest of the day. Only critical matters should be attended to!

4. Beware of mobile costs abroad.

Using mobile Internet while traveling abroad can be extremely expensive. You will save tons of money if you utilize Wi-Fi in your hotel, cafes, and restaurants. If you need more connectivity than just relying on hotels and restaurants, it’s important to check if your mobile phone has international roaming. There are several options out there to add an international travel plan that fits your exact needs.

How do you find the balance to stay connected while you’re on holiday? We’d love to hear your tips and tricks!
