BetterWorld is honored to support an organization doing so much for conservation and education about our natural environment right here in the Bay Area. Golden Gate Audubon has worked tirelessly since 1917 to preserve and protect local birds and their habitats.
Recently, Audubon has been responsible for the agreement by the wind industry at Altamont Pass to shift their windmills over the next four years and avoid the death of 4,700 birds annually.
They also have expanded designated marshland areas in cooperation with new housing developments in the San Francisco area.
Perhaps most importantly, they are educating Bay Area citizens who might otherwise not have access to the bay and to information about it’s wildlife through science and learning programs specifically for those schools that do not have the funding to have these science programs on their own.
From birding classes, and field trips, to habitat restoration and legal action, Golden Gate Audubon is a dedicated steward and passionate advocate for birds.
In order to fundraise, the organization holds a birdathon race for various categories including most species spotted and most unusual birds. The birdathon award winners of the night were truly avid birders, most rare bird spotted in the Bay Area was the Baltimore Oriole and most birds spotted by a team (traveling in group) in a 24 hr period was over 120 species.
As one Audubon member put it, “Birds are a great entry point into learning more about the natural world. Birds are everywhere, even in the city.”
