Rockin' Amory Lovins and Rocky Mountain Institute

July 11, 2010

Last week, we a very fortunate to attend a small reception held by Jim Buckmaster, Craigslist CEO, and Susan MacTavish in downtown San Francisco.  Amory Lovins (Co Founder, Chief Scientist), Michael Potts (CEO), and Marty Pickett (Executive Director) of Rocky Mountain Institute were in attendance and Amory Lovins spoke at length about RMI’s current and past endeavors – everyone there was literally hanging on all his words, it is truly amazing what they have accomplished and the level of impact they are having…from the built environment to industry, oil and gas, and transportation, simply put, it seems as if we just left the engineering of how things tick to RMI, we’d probably have solved many of the critical problems facing our species, long ago.  If you are not familiar with there work, make sure you take the time to peruse their website, explore their publications and definitely go hear Amory anytime he is speaking in your neck of the woods.

Rocky Mountain Institute is an independent, entrepreneurial nonprofit think-and-do tank™ that drives the efficient and restorative use of resources. Established in 1982 by Amory and Hunter Lovins, what began as a small group of colleagues focusing on energy solutions has since grown into a broad-based Institute with approximately 90 full-time staff, an annual budget of nearly $15 million, and a global reach.  RMI is engaged in research that addresses pragmatic designs, practices, and policies, not social theories or laboratory experiments. We work on all parts of the solution process—idea, strategy, and implementation—in the high impact areas of energy, mobility and vehicle efficiency, energy resource use, security, and the built environment.

Instead of focusing on the negative consequences of our actions, RMI brings a philosophy of applied hope to overcoming our challenges. We use applied hope to create truly transformative change to bring about a future that is just, prosperous, and life-sustaining for all, for ever.
We look forward to hopefully striking up a conversation with RMI around our BetterWork framework and see if we can work together to expand its reach and capabilities. For more information:  www.rmi.org.

Matt
