Last Friday I had the honor of meeting with David Coffey, Executive Director of Recovery Cafe — an inspirational person who runs an amazing organization serving men and women who are homeless, addicted, and/or suffering from mental illness.
Recovery Cafe is a Seattle-based non-profit recovery support center that utilizes an alternative therapeutic community model. In a beautiful space, the Cafe supports women and men who are seeking a life of transformation, hope and one without drugs and alcohol. The need for recovery support far outweighs the current resources available. The Recovery Cafe’s response to this need is to provide a place where each person is known and loved, a refuge for healing and hope on the journey of recovery.
The Cafe offers warmth, food, hugs, smiles, and lots of companionship. While being taken on a tour, I met many of the regulars who exuded a sense of hope, confidence, and gratitude. There were lots of smiling smiley faces, especially from the staff who clearly could see the true essence of each person who entered the building. Compassion, which really means the lack of judgment, really can change the world. For more information about the Recovery Cafe, please visit www.recoverycafe.org.
