This past week, BetterWorld joined over 150 companies, 250 CEOs and leaders to storm the Senate and White House – – all united in a common voice pushing for speedy passage of comprehensive climate legislation this year. Organized by the Clean Economy Network and CERES, entrepreneurs and leaders from all sectors and 37 states descended on D.C. to emphasize to the Obama administration and Senate Leadership that it is critical to not just the environment, but our economy, competitiveness, and national security, that a clean energy framework be adopted NOW.
The day of lobbying started at the White House, where Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and Energy Secretary Steven Chu joined Energy and Climate Change Czar Carol Browner to discuss President Obama’s energy-climate plan with the assembled group of business leaders from around the country. The group of 250+ was then expertly deployed and shuttled to more than 55 senate offices over the course of the afternoon, an amazing feat indeed & the largest concerted lobbying effort to date for passage of climate legislation.
BetterWorld joined a number of other leading companies and organizations including HP, Sol Therm Energy, Renaissance Lighting, Dow Chemical and the Energy Foundation to call on Congressman Rick Boucher’s office, as well as Senator Bayh (IN), Sen. John Warner (VA), and Senator Jim Webb (VA) – the great day was capped with a reception of 300+ at the new and beautiful Visitor’s Center at the Capitol.
This is just the beginning of the push, but a loud and clear statement was made and heard across D.C. this week: speedy passage of comprehensive climate legislation is essential to businesses across the country, for our future generations and our competitiveness in the world economy. Congrats to the Clean Economy Network and CERES for pulling off a minor miracle – a great effort indeed. For more information: www.wecanlead.org
