Our Visit with the Ella Baker Center

December 10, 2008

A few days ago, we stopped by to see our customers and friends at the Ella Baker Center in Oakland – – their impact is being felt not only in the East Bay area where they are based but all over the country and world now as Ella Baker co-founder Van Jones has now created their sister organization Green For All, which is leading the charge for the Green Job movement. BetterWorld has been working with 1Sky, partner to Green For All and we will be working with Green For All in 2009 to help spur the Green Jobs movement in the telecom industry.

Ella Josephine Baker, pictured above, (December 13, 1903 – December 13, 1986) was a leading African American civil rights and human rights activist beginning in the 1930s. She was a behind-the-scenes activist whose career spanned over five decades. She worked alongside some of the most famous civil rights leaders of the twentieth century, including: W.E.B. DuBois, Thurgood Marshall, A. Philip Randolph, and Martin Luther King Jr. She also mentored such then young civil rights stalwarts as Diane Nash, Stokely Carmichael and Bob Moses.

My favorite Ella Baker quote – “Remember, we are not fighting for the freedom of the Negro alone, but for the freedom of the human spirit a larger freedom that encompasses all mankind.”
