As active members of the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC), we try to play an active role in the promotion and discussion around technology companies in our National Capitol Region. This morning, Bill Gates was the featured speaker at the ongoing Titans Breakfast Series – haven’t seen Bill in person before, but almost a 1,000 of us were hanging on his every word.
His predications about the progress of technology and software were very thoughtful and interesting & one can probably bet what he’s saying will come true actually is bankable. Areas he mentioned that have a significant opportunity and high priority over the next five to ten years include TV & broadcasting in general, which he predicts is going to get more and more integrated with the web, computers and personalized choice both for content and advertising.
In addition, he sees telephony and communications becoming more virtual (we’re on that one by the way, see our Virtual PBX, VoIP and Unified Communications offerings www.betterworldtechnology.com/produts), and integrated with the desktop and computing in general – web, video, voice – all soon just applications over a high speed pipe. One other area is the educational research and development, which he and Microsoft have made a major priority in the coming years to help facilitate and enable a much greater degree of productivity and exploration using new advances in software and computer speeds.
All in all, seems in person like a cool guy and very insightful even to the average bear (an old Yogi Bear cartoon term, fyi for all you gen x, y-ers and beyond) – funny that he and Paul Allen were high school buddies, Paul came to him one day and said, “…hey, heard about those micro processors just developed?” They then discussed Moore’s Law, exponentiation and the rest is history…
