On a cold & dreary New England day we drove out to the far Boston suburbs to pay our first visit to the folks at Equal Exchange’s West Bridgewater HQ. We were in the capable hands of David Bates, who works in EE’s Finance Dept. – As David opened the door from the front offices and cafe into the operations center and warehouse, our jaws dropped on the ground. What an amazing, enormous operation that Equal Exchange has amassed over the past 21 years.
Mountains of fair trade and organic coffee from all over the world, two story roasters on full blast, teas, chocolate, nuts – truly an amazing sight…all tied to the great Equal Exchange Mission: To build long-term trade partnerships that are economically just and environmentally sound, to foster mutually beneficial relationships between farmers and consumers and to demonstrate, through our success, the contribution of worker co-operatives to a more equitable, democratic and sustainable world.
And it was a great week for Equal Exchange, rightfully recognized by Fast Company in their Annaul Social Capitalist awards issue as one of 10 for profit winners of the award – see blog below for more info on the awards and the many BetterWorld customers that were on the list.
