We celebrate today the great achievements of our customers and friends BetterWorld Books, Seventh Generation, New Leaf Paper, Sustainability, Mercy Corps, TransFair, and Witness – – all have been highlighted in the just released Fast Company Annual Social Capitalist awards issue. This is the first year that Fast Company is recognizing for-profits as well, which added an additional 10 orgs to the usual 25.
David Murphy, President and CEO of BetterWorld books, sent a great email this AM explaining the rigorous process and giving props to Fast Company for conducting a thorough vetting of the orgs that ended up being selected. He also highlighted the last para of the article, which I love and take to heart as well – it rides in contrast to some folks out there who continue to hold that for-profits should “stick to their knitting” and produce profits only for community good: “Change the world. Make some money. Raise more money, and make more change. It is an appealing prospect. Nonprofits were born because for-profits weren’t addressing some market failures — pollution, poverty, illiteracy. Profits won’t cure those ills, but it’s becoming a bigger part of more solutions. Perhaps it’s dawning on us that the cost of capital for changing the world should be lower. Perhaps the capital markets will cut the world a break.”
What a great world it would be…
In Service,
Matt
